He always said how lucky he was, even after being diagnosed with lymphoma. He felt he had lead a charmed life, and was grateful for every minute. The last 5 years of his life felt like 30 because he was so conscious and took nothing for granted. It was his perpetual wonderment, even when things got bad, that kept me sane. He was more ok about leaving than I was to have him leave, that much is certain.
