In the foreground is Vulcan's crutch... he was made lame after his mother Juno threw him off of the top of Mount Olympus because he was a small, ugly child. Vulcan, who was raised by the sea nymph Thetis after falling into the sea, came to be considered as the manufacturer of art, arms, iron, jewellery and armor for various gods and heroes, including the thunderbolts of Jupiter.
